1st Annual Valentown Civil War Encampment Weekend.
September 16 & 17, 2006
9am-5pm
Camp with the Troops starts at 6pm Sat. Evening
Bring the whole family and step back to the early days of our nation's history when civil unrest erupted into a full battle between the northern and southern states. Walk among the troops' from both sides sleeping quarters, watch them cook their meals over campfires, observe the field surgeons' facilities and primitive instruments, talk to the families who traveled with their men and learn about the camp followers who provided laundry and other support services during the war. Professional re-enactors will be in period costume and depict as closely a possible what life was like on the middle 1800's warfront in the United States.
In attendance at the Valentown Civil War Encampment Weekend will be: The 140th NYVU, the Excelsior Brigade Fife and Drum Corps, Col Frank Cutler and his Civil War Small Arms Display, Civil War Field Artillery Display and of course our unit the 38th Regt. Georgia Volunteers including both Military and Civilian impressions and a period Surgeon.
140th NYVI Company B Living History Organization, representing the original 140th NYVI, known as the Second Monroe County Regiment. The unit won its name to fame on Little Round Top at Gettysburg in 1863 where they were instrumental in driving back the Confederate attack, commanded by Col Patrick O Roarke who gave his live leading his men to Victory. Time and again the 140th would prove their metal in combat. Proudly wearing their new Zouave uniforms, they would pay dearly at the Wilderness where they suffered 255 casualties of the 500 men engaged.
The 38th Regiment Georgia Volunteers, Company F, drawn from the farms and homesteads of North East Georgia, these men mustered to the call to arms in the fall of 1861 for the new fledgling Confederacy. They would serve under Gen. John B. Gordon as part of his famed Georgia Brigade and would be engaged in 29 major engagements of the eastern theater. 1200 strong that fall of 1861 they would number only 108 at Appomattox where they were the last soldiers of the Army of Northern Virginia to be engaged before the surrender.
The event will include period camps and military and civilian and medical demonstrations, and extensive small arms display featuring many original firearms used in the War Between the States, an Artillery display featuring many examples of artillery used during the war.
Valentown Museum, the site of that area's Civil War unit muster, offers 12 rooms of artifacts from the same period of Victor pioneer life. The Museum will be open for FREE tours to the public during this event and should not be missed.
Spend the day exploring life on the home front as well as troop life on the warfront as Americans fought one another.
